Free Accessible therapy. Meaningful support.

Finding a therapist can be difficult. Finding one you connect with, can afford, and can continue seeing consistently can be even harder.

Diaspora Therapy Group’s Pro Bono Therapy Clinic provides free individual therapy for eligible clients for up to one year. Services are provided by graduate-level student therapists completing their clinical training under the supervision of a licensed clinician.

Our goal is to expand access to thoughtful, culturally responsive, trauma-informed mental health care while providing emerging therapists with meaningful clinical training and close supervision.

What Is the Pro Bono Therapy Clinic?

The Pro Bono Therapy Clinic is a training program that allows eligible clients to receive therapy at no cost for up to one year.

Therapy is provided by graduate students completing supervised clinical training in counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, psychology, or a related mental health field.

Student therapists have not yet graduated or obtained independent clinical licensure. Their work is closely supervised by a licensed clinician to support ethical, thoughtful, and high-quality care.

What Can I Talk About in Therapy?

You do not need to be in crisis or have a specific diagnosis to benefit from therapy.

Depending on your needs and whether our clinic is an appropriate level of care, therapy may address:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Depression
  • Grief and loss
  • Relationship concerns
  • Family dynamics
  • Identity exploration
  • Life transitions
  • Self-esteem and self-worth
  • Boundaries
  • Work or school stress
  • Trauma and difficult life experiences
  • Cultural, racial, gender, and LGBTQ+ identity-related experiences

Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to identify what you would like to focus on and what you hope to gain from therapy.

Who Will Be My Therapist?

You will work with a student therapist who is currently completing graduate-level clinical training.

We believe transparency about this is important. Student therapists are still learning and developing their clinical skills. They are not independently licensed therapists and have not yet completed their graduate training.

They are also not practicing alone.

Student therapists receive ongoing clinical supervision from a licensed clinician who provides guidance, consultation, and oversight of their clinical work. Your therapist may discuss your treatment in supervision so they can receive support in providing appropriate care.

Culturally Responsive & Affirming Care

Diaspora Therapy Group was built around the understanding that therapy does not happen outside of culture, identity, relationships, community, or systems.

Our student therapists are trained and supervised within a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, LGBTQ+ affirming framework. We encourage curiosity, humility, collaboration, and an awareness of how power and identity can show up within the therapy relationship.

You should not have to leave important parts of yourself outside the therapy room.

How Long Can I Receive Free Therapy?

Eligible clients may receive pro bono therapy for up to one year while working with their assigned student therapist.

Because this is a clinical training program, therapist availability and placement timelines may vary. Participation in the program does not guarantee a full year of services in every circumstance, and we will communicate openly about any changes that could affect your care.

Is the Pro Bono Clinic Right for Everyone?

Our training clinic is designed for individuals whose needs can be appropriately supported within an outpatient, student-training environment.

Before beginning therapy, we will complete an intake and screening process to determine whether the clinic is an appropriate fit for your current needs. Some individuals may benefit from a provider or program offering a different level of care, specialization, or clinical support.

If the Pro Bono Therapy Clinic is not the appropriate setting, we will let you know and, when possible, help identify other options for care.
