Spirituality & Divination-Informed Therapy

At Diaspora Therapy Group, we recognize that mental health and healing are not always separate from spirituality, culture, religion, ancestry, or personal belief systems. Our spirituality and divination-informed therapy services offer clients the option to incorporate these parts of their lives into traditional psychotherapy.

This may include exploring spirituality, tarot, oracle cards, astrology, ancestral practices, ritual, dreams, intuition, or other forms of meaning-making alongside evidence-based and established therapeutic approaches.

You do not need to identify as religious or spiritual to explore this work. You may be deeply connected to a spiritual practice, questioning what you believe, reconnecting with cultural traditions, healing from religious trauma, or simply curious about how spirituality fits into your mental health.

Integrating Spirituality Into Therapy

Traditional Western psychotherapy can provide valuable tools for understanding trauma, relationships, emotions, behavior, and mental health. At the same time, many people understand themselves through cultural and spiritual frameworks that are not always acknowledged in conventional therapy. Our therapists can make room for both. Spirituality-informed therapy may explore:

-Spirituality and mental health
-Tarot and oracle cards as tools for self-reflection
-Divination and personal meaning-making
– Astrology
– Dreams and symbolism
– Ancestral and cultural practices
– Religion and spiritual identity
– Religious trauma and spiritual abuse
– Spiritual deconstruction
– Grief, death, and relationships with loved ones who have died
– Ritual, prayer, meditation, and contemplative practices
– Intuition and embodied awareness
– Cultural or diasporic approaches to healing
– Questions about purpose, identity, belonging, and meaning

Spirituality is incorporated based on your interests, beliefs, and comfort level. Your therapist will not impose their own spiritual or religious beliefs onto your treatment.

Tarot, Oracle Cards & Divination in Therapy

For clients who are interested, tarot cards, oracle cards, and other forms of divination may be incorporated into psychotherapy as tools for reflection, curiosity, and exploration. For example, pulling a tarot or oracle card might prompt a conversation about a relationship, internal conflict, life transition, grief, fear, or decision you are facing. Rather than using the card to tell you what will happen or what you should do, your therapist may invite you to explore your response to the imagery, language, symbolism, or themes that emerge.

A tarot card might lead into a conversation about attachment or recurring relationship patterns. An oracle card might offer language for an emotion or internal experience that has been difficult to name. A dream might bring attention to a recurring fear. An astrological framework might help you explore aspects of identity or relationships. A ritual might provide structure around grief, transition, or closure.

The goal is not to replace psychotherapy with divination. Instead, these practices can provide another entry point into therapeutic conversations when they are meaningful to you.

Spirituality, Culture & Mental Health

For many communities, spirituality and mental health have never been completely separate. Cultural traditions, religious practices, ancestral knowledge, community rituals, storytelling, and spiritual beliefs have long helped people understand grief, trauma, relationships, identity, and major life transitions.

Western mental health care has not always made space for these experiences. At times, spiritual and culturally rooted practices have been dismissed, misunderstood, or unnecessarily pathologized.

Our approach is grounded in cultural humility. We are interested in understanding what your beliefs and practices mean to you rather than determining whether they fit within a particular Western framework.

Religious Trauma & Spiritual Deconstruction

Spirituality-informed therapy does not require maintaining or returning to a religious or spiritual practice. For some clients, the work is about examining harm they have experienced within religious communities, families, or belief systems.

Therapy can provide space to process religious trauma, spiritual abuse, shame, fear, identity conflicts, family expectations, purity culture, rejection related to gender or sexuality, or the loss of community that can accompany changing religious beliefs.

You do not need to arrive knowing what you believe. Therapy can be a place to question, grieve, rebuild, reconnect, or decide that spirituality is no longer something you want in your life.

How Spirituality-Informed Therapy Works

Spirituality and divination-informed therapy can be integrated with approaches such as psychodynamic therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), EMDR, somatic therapy, cognitive and behavioral approaches, attachment-based therapy, and family systems therapy. Your mental health treatment remains grounded in professional clinical standards, informed consent, and your individual treatment goals.

Spiritual practices, tarot cards, oracle cards, astrology, and other forms of divination are not used to diagnose mental health conditions, predict the future, make decisions for you, or replace appropriate mental health, psychiatric, or medical treatment. Instead, we treat spirituality as one of the many parts of a person’s life that may be relevant to understanding who they are, how they make meaning, and what healing looks like for them.
