Accessible Therapy. Meaningful support.
Finding a therapist can be difficult. Finding one you connect with, can afford, and can continue seeing consistently can be even harder.
Diaspora Therapy Group’s Affordable Care Clinic provides individual therapy on a sliding scale of up to $25 per session, helping make ongoing mental health care more accessible for people who may otherwise face financial barriers to therapy. Services are provided by graduate-level student therapists completing their clinical training under the supervision of licensed clinicians.
Our goal is to expand access to thoughtful, culturally responsive, trauma-informed mental health care while providing emerging therapists with meaningful clinical training, mentorship, and close supervision.
What Is the Affordable Care Clinic?
The Affordable Care Clinic is Diaspora Therapy Group’s training clinic, offering therapy on a sliding scale up to $25 per session based on financial circumstances. We believe that cost should not be the reason someone has to go without mental health support. The sliding scale allows us to offer care at a significantly reduced rate while creating space for clients with different financial needs.
Therapy is provided by graduate students completing supervised clinical training in counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, psychology, or related mental health fields. Student therapists have not yet obtained independent clinical licensure and are continuing to develop their clinical skills. Their work is closely supervised by licensed clinicians to support ethical, thoughtful, and high-quality care.
What Can I Talk About in Therapy?
You do not need to be in crisis or have a specific diagnosis to benefit from therapy. Sometimes you know exactly what you want to work on. Other times, you may simply know that something in your life, relationships, or sense of self is not working the way you would like it to.
Depending on your needs and whether our clinic is an appropriate level of care, therapy may address:
- Anxiety, stress, and overwhelm
- Depression
- Grief and loss
- Relationship concerns
- Family dynamics
- Identity exploration
- Life transitions
- Self-esteem and self-worth
- Boundaries and people-pleasing
- Work or school stress
- Trauma and difficult life experiences
- Cultural and racial identity
- Gender and sexuality
- LGBTQ+ experiences
- Navigating family, community, and cultural expectations
Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to understand what is bringing you to therapy and identify what you would like your work together to look like.
Who Will Be My Therapist?
You will work with a student therapist currently completing graduate-level clinical training.
We believe transparency about training status is important. Student therapists are still learning and developing their clinical skills. They are not independently licensed clinicians and have not yet completed all requirements necessary for independent practice. But they are not doing this work alone. Student therapists receive ongoing supervision from licensed clinicians who provide guidance, consultation, education, and oversight of their clinical work. Your therapist will discuss their clinical work in supervision so they can receive support in providing thoughtful and appropriate care.
Working with a student therapist can also mean working with someone who is actively engaged in current clinical education, receives regular consultation, and has dedicated space to think carefully about their work with you.
Culturally Responsive & Affirming Care
Diaspora Therapy Group was built around a simple understanding: therapy does not happen outside of culture, identity, relationships, community, or systems.
Our student therapists are trained and supervised within a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, LGBTQ+ affirming framework. We encourage curiosity, humility, collaboration, and awareness of how identity, culture, privilege, marginalization, and power can show up both in our lives and within the therapy relationship.
We welcome conversations about race, culture, gender, sexuality, family, spirituality, relationships, disability, immigration, community, and other experiences that shape how you move through the world. You should not have to leave important parts of yourself outside the therapy room.
How Much Does Therapy Cost?
Sessions through the Affordable Care Clinic are offered on a sliding scale up to $25. Your session fee will be determined as part of the intake process based on your financial circumstances. Our goal is to keep the process straightforward and respectful rather than creating unnecessary barriers to accessing care.
Because the Affordable Care Clinic is designed specifically to increase access to therapy, availability at each sliding-scale level may depend on current clinic capacity.
How Long Can I Receive Services?
The Affordable Care Clinic is intended to provide ongoing outpatient therapy rather than only short-term or crisis-based support. Because this is also a clinical training program, student therapist placements have defined training periods. The length of time you are able to work with a particular therapist may therefore depend on their training placement and availability.
We will communicate openly with you about your therapist’s anticipated training timeline and any changes that could affect your care. When transitions are necessary, we will work with you to discuss appropriate next steps and continuity of care whenever possible.
Is the Affordable Care Clinic Right for Everyone?
The Affordable Care Clinic is designed for individuals whose needs can be appropriately supported within an outpatient, student-training environment. Before beginning therapy, we will complete an intake and screening process to make sure the clinic can appropriately support your current needs. Some individuals may need a provider or program offering a different level of care, more intensive support, or specialized clinical services that are outside the scope of our training clinic.
If the Affordable Care Clinic is not the appropriate setting for your needs, we will be transparent about that and, when possible, help identify other options for care.
